“Beach”~ Hair Tips 101

#1 When at the beach, or beside the pool, take a hat or scarf with you to protect your hair from the damaging rays of the sun. Your hair can be damaged not only by the summer heat, but also by the UV rays pumping up the "frizzes".

#2 Use leave in conditioners or hair care products that contain SPF protection already in them to lock in moisture. If this is unavailable to you, then simply rub some of the sunscreen for your skin through your tresses. Hey, hair is but an extension of your skin anyway, so it can't hurt ;-)

#3 To avoid overly frizzy looking or split ends, visit your hair stylist to get them trimmed every 6 to 8 weeks. You can also do this simply yourself if you prefer. And, if you can cut straight ;-)

#4 Switch over to a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner duo during the hotter months if your hair is showing signs of getting dry. Look for moisturizers that help replenish vital nutrients to your hair.

#5 Use a clarifying shampoo to remove chlorine damage from swimming. Try and wash your hair immediately after going for a refreshing dip in the pool. The sooner the better as you can reduce some of the harsh effects quickly.

#6 To reduce the amount of 'green tint' in your hair, especially for blonds, apply a bit of conditioner (leave in or normal) to your hair before entering the water. Having your hair pre-moistened before swimming can also help reduce the 'greens'.

#7 If your hair is already showing signs of a greenish tint, then you may want to try applying tomato juice to your hair, wrap up with a plastic shower cap and leave it on 15-30 minutes, then rinse.

#8 When showering, lower the water temperature a bit and try to avoid, hot, steamy showers. This will further dry out your hair and scalp, something you don't want to do when the weather is hot. Try to limit yourself to luke warm to cool showers. Taking them during the daylight hours will help.

#9 If going to the beach where there is salty sea water be sure to carry a bottle of club soda or mineral water with you so that after you finish your dip, you can rinse all that salt out of your hair. You may also want to re-apply any leave in conditioner to your hair after rinsing to be sure your hair stays beautiful after your day at the beach! This also works well when swimming in chlorinated pools.

Summer Hair Made Beautiful Healthy and Strong

Drink plenty of water! Since your hair is an extension of your skin, it needs to be hydrated from the inside out. Drinking plenty of water will help resupply the inner moisture your hair needs to look healthy.

Try to steer clear of hair products that contain alcohol. Things such as hair gel, hair sprays, and some mousses contain alcohol; these will also dry out your hair. The key to having beautiful summer hair is to keep it well hydrated and moisturized.

Condition your hair every day during the hot months, even if you normally don't use conditioner. If you don't normally condition, try using a lighter conditioner, if you always use conditioner, try a deep conditioning treatment at least 3 times a week as well as using your normal conditioning treatments.

Give a deep conditioning hair mask a try at least once a week. This will help repair some of the drying damage to your hair. Look for those hair masking products that contain moisturizing elements such as butters or oils, these will work best.

Use hair accessories that don't "tear or pull" your hair. It will be under enough stress from the heat and humidity. Try 'ouch less' ponytail holders. ‘Goody’ brand makes them and you can pick them up at your local corner drug store or at Wal-Mart for a couple bucks.

When summer arrives, your hair care and shampooing/conditioning regime should change just slightly. Hair care is extremely crucial during the summer months.

When the weather heats up, your hair can become very dry and brittle, especially when you go swimming in chlorinated pools and salty beaches.

The chemicals from the chlorine can be extremely harmful to your hair and result in hair breakage and in some cases, hair loss.

Following are a couple more tips that should help keep the moisture in your hair whether you choose to skinny dip in the pool or tackle the great big ocean.

TIP #5

Cut down on the amount of times you wash your hair during the summer months. Washing takes away natural oils secreted by your scalp and dries out your hair. If you cannot stand not washing your hair daily or 2-3 times a week, then try using a lighter shampoo, such as a daily clarifying formula which you can find easily.

For you swimmers, make sure you follow your shampooing with a great conditioner that you can leave in.

How Does The Sun, Chlorine, And Salt Water Damage Your Hair In The First Place?

Whether you realize it or not, the sun can be extremely harmful to your hair. The same UV rays that damage your sensitive skin can also damage your hair!

The reason for this is due to what hair actually is. Do you know what your hair is made up of or how it grows? Let me explain, then you will better understand why the same sunlight that affects our precious skin cells affects our hair in the same manner.

Hair is basically made up from our dead skin cells. When the cells builds up, it springs from our dermis tissue layer by way of our hair follicles through our epidermis. This is precisely how our hair grows!

Because hair is made up of skin cells, it can still be affected, albeit in a different manner, by the heat and harmful UV rays of the sun just as our skin is. But this is not the only thing to understand about the chemical make-up of our hair.

Hair is mostly comprised of a specific protein called Keratin. Lack of this protein can affect the texture of our hair, so supplements are used to replace this lost protein via specific hair care products. That is why many of them contain "keratin" ;-).

Just as hair is damaged and dried out through the use of blow dryers, curling irons, and straightening irons, so too can the sun have the same lasting effects. This can make your hair appear dull and "lifeless". It can also create any of the following conditions: dryness, fragility, brittleness, among others due to constant drying.

Because of this "drying out", we must replenish our hair just as we do our bodies when we are thirsty. When your hair is dry or damaged, it's thirsty. This is why many treatment methods for dry hair call for specific moisturizing elements.

In addition, what we eat is also important to healthy hair growth. Since our hair is made up of certain types of protein and skin cells, it should make perfect sense that what we eat has a great effect on the health of our hair, just as it does the rest of our bodies.

Eating a full diet containing protein, fruits, vegetables, grains, and even an appropriate amount of fat is important (several vitamins and minerals require fat in order to be delivered or absorbed by the body) to stimulate the growth of healthy hair from our follicles.

Because of the chemical make-up of our hair, certain outside elements affect it in very specific ways.

Take for example the sun. As mentioned earlier, long exposure to the sun would be the same as blow drying or curling your hair with a curling iron. It dries out your hair taking away vital moisture. It can also cause "split ends" as a result of exposure, or over exposure, as many of us enjoy daily activities outdoors in the direct sunlight.

In addition, UV rays from the sun expose our hair to natural radiation. This type of radiation reacts to the hair in a different manner than it does to our skin, but still has damaging effects. Extended exposure without protection to UV rays can cause our hair to become fragile, brittle, or thinned over time.

UV rays also cause the texture of our hair to change. They can make our hair feel rough and dry instead of silky and smooth.

Going swimming, even in our backyards, inside a pool that has been chemically treated with chlorine can also cause terrible damage to our hair.

Both chlorine and salt water can dry out our hair. And, continued exposure simply intensifies these affects damaging our hair even further. Not to mention that those with color treated hair can experience discoloration giving gray or green hues to the tint.

Furthermore, the mineral deposits salt water contains in direct combination with sunlight dehydrate your hair on a massive level. It can also make your hair color appear as "brassy".

All the chemicals used in pools and the minerals present in sea, or salt water, adhere to the hair which is what causes these color changes, and can also give a dull, unhealthy look to our hair.

Everything we don't want when we think about the way we wish our hair to appear!

That is why we must take steps to ensure the beauty, and safety, of our hair before we even step foot outside. Following, are a couple more tips that will help to curb all the harmful effects summer activities can have on your hair.

TIP#3

Try to avoid blow drying your hair during the torrid summer months. This will only add extra heat damage to your delicate locks. If you must use your blow dryer, try using a lower heat setting.

TIP#4

Try adding Jojoba oil on the ends of your hair at night time when getting ready for bed. This will also help tame the dry frizzes. Use a plastic shower cap to prevent leakage or staining your bedding and leave this on overnight to help re-moisturize your dry hair.

Give your hair a light "rinse" in the morning and slather some leave-in conditioner on your hair for that added protection.

What Is Alopecia Areata?

Alopecia areata is considered an autoimmune disease, in which the immune system, which is designed to protect the body from foreign invaders such as viruses and bacteria, mistakenly attacks the hair follicles, the tiny cup-shaped structures from which hairs grow. This can lead to hair loss on the scalp and elsewhere.

In most cases, hair falls out in small, round patches about the size of a quarter. In many cases, the disease does not extend beyond a few bare patches. In some people, hair loss is more extensive. Although uncommon, the disease can progress to cause total loss of hair on the head (referred to as alopecia areata totalis) or complete loss of hair on the head, face, and body (alopecia areata universalis).

What Causes It?

In alopecia areata, immune system cells called white blood cells attack the rapidly growing cells in the hair follicles that make the hair. The affected hair follicles become small and drastically slow down hair production. Fortunately, the stem cells that continually supply the follicle with new cells do not seem to be targeted. So the follicle always has the potential to regrow hair.

Scientists do not know exactly why the hair follicles undergo these changes, but they suspect that a combination of genes may predispose some people to the disease. In those who are genetically predisposed, some type of trigger--perhaps a virus or something in the person's environment--brings on the attack against the hair follicles.

5 Ways to Reduce Dandruff

Dandruff is detected by the itchy and flakiness of the scalp. You can always check with your

dermatologist to identify the problem and for remedies that help cure it. You may not even have

dandruff; your current hair product including shampoo and conditioner could be irritating your

scalp. So, try switching your product first to a non-dandruff fighting shampoo and conditioner.

See if the flakiness goes away. Stress can be a main cause for dandruff, so make sure that you

try relaxing techniques daily to reduce your stress level.

1. Shampoo

Wash your hair with warm to cool water. Try a mild shampoo for a few weeks, and if you do not

see any results, use an anti-dandruff shampoo. You should notice improvement in 4-6 weeks.

Avoid alcohol based products, or any other styling products until the dandruff subsides. Instead

use a leave-in conditioner to maintain shape.

2. Aloe Vera

You need to soothe your scalp because it is red and irritated, so try Aloe Vera. Rub the gel onto

the scalp and keep it on overnight. Be sure to replace your pillowcase.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar

Try pouring two tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar onto your scalp, or lemon juice, or even try

a mixture of both. Leave it on for as long as you like about 20 minutes to an hour should work

4. Coconut Oil, Lavender Oil Soothing to the Scalp

Coconut Oil and Lavender Oil with a base of Olive and essential oils

is a mild and soothing choice in relieving dandruff. You can chill it and work it

through your hair. After a few days the dandruff should be gone.

5. Herbal

You can use various herbs including ginger, rosemary, tea or thyme. You can combine ginger

and rosemary with olive oil, separately and rub onto the scalp. Tea can be made and then

rubbed into the hair and shampooed. The oil from Thyme is an antiseptic and can be boiled and

left on your hair.

You can also try to eliminate dandruff from the inside out. Cut back on junk food, or eliminate it

completely from your diet. Try eating yogurt. Also, include more fruits and vegetables and

incorporate (soy) milk.

If the dandruff problem persists, or any of these remedies make the problem worse discontinue

and seek medical attention. You want to be sure it is in fact dandruff you are seeking. If it is

another skin condition, it will be treated using different remedies.

Okay guys, be honest, how much do you really care about your hair? It is typical to think that guys don’t spend much time caring about their appearance let alone their hair.

These days you see more men of color wearing locs—glorious locs. I think today more than ever before men are starting to care about more than just their hair. They are heading over to nail salons and putting their feet up for a pedicure and handing over their hands for a manicure.

Don’t be surprised though. Women love a manicured, clean man. For women, cleanliness in your outer appearance represents cleanliness in the bedroom.

It’s high time that men take heed and care for their health, bodies and appearance as they like to see their women do. There is absolutely nothing effeminate about this…it’s the manly thing to do.

The following are a couple of tips for caring for your natural hair.

1. Shampoo & Conditioner

A good shampoo has four basic characteristics

It cleanses the hair of oil and debris
It works up a good lather in hard and soft water
It does not irritate the skin
and it leaves the hair and scalp feeling cleansed and looking healthy

Just because you are a guy doesn’t mean you shouldn’t condition your hair. Many conditioners contain lanolin, vegetable oil, proteins, and herbs, which are designed to restore your natural oils and moisturize your hair for optimal hair health and growth potential.

Leave-in conditioners are a great alternative to pomades, sprays, gels and other styling products. Your hair will be more manageable and style able as a result.

2. Homemade Remedies To Add Shine And Protein To Your Mane Of Locs

Eggs provide protein to your diet, and they can also work as a protein for your hair when you add the yolk (not the whites) to your shampoo.

As a deep conditioning regimen, I recommend this being done perhaps once a week or once a month.

Simply beat the egg yolk (1 yolk) in a bowl, and apply to wet hair in the shampoo lather. Let it sit on your hair for about 5 minutes while you hang over the wash tub or sink. Follow this with a luke warm or cold water rinse. Do not use hot water, unless you want scrambled eggs on your head!

Lemon Rinse

Use a lemon rinse to clear out the hair. Squeeze about half a lemon into a big cup (strain out the seeds and pulp) add about 1 cup of cool water and let lemon water trickle through your hair.

Follow this with a warm olive oil treatment. Work in an ounce of olive oil to shampooed hair and wrap a steaming hot towel on your head. Leave in for 10 or 15 minutes and rinse lightly; towel dry gently.

3. Styling

I always believe less is more when it comes to men’s hair styling. The end result, when you

have finished styling should never look overdone. Men’s hair looks better if it looks and smells clean. If you have put some effort into your appearance, and used a small amount of product in your hair to give it that natural glow.

Depending on the length and texture of your hair--if you have curly hair you may want to use

a mousse to help you manage your style. For straight hair, try a gel. Pomades work well to keep your hair in place if you have a close crop cut and you brush your hair to keep the waves in place.

Natural oils and moisturizing sprays work well for dredlocs and coarse afros.

Whatever hairstyle you choose to wear gentlemen remember, cleanliness is a big plus to the opposite sex.

Many people of color spend a large amount of money on black hair care products each month. If you are

spending a great deal on these products, you may be shocked to learn that you can get many of the

same quality hair care products for less, taking into consideration what you actually need to

use. Keep in mind that using too many products can damage your hair.

So the question is:

What is the solution to having beautiful healthy natural hair without breaking the bank?

One option to consider is simply purchasing only what you need. Don’t be a ‘product junkie’ and

stock up on products that you will not use up in a life time.

For the last month and a half I've gotten a couple of orders for my hair oils and its' been wonderful. But I have to say that this has come to me without me even really trying to promote my store, at least not aggressively yet. Your head is a piece of machinery that only a Magnificent God could create to function and operate in the capacity that it does. What that says to me is that they are trusting me with one of the most intimate parts of their body—their hair…our hair is our glory and I am being trusted to "fix" some ones glory, that's awesome to me.

The Benefits of Jojoba Oil for your Skin and Scalp

Most people easily associate “jojoba” or “jojoba oil” with cosmetics. They are used to seeing it in the products they use every day including moisturizers, shampoos and conditioners, even anti-aging and sun care products. But this hypoallergenic “oil” (it's actually a liquid wax) is also available in its simplest form, pure pressed jojoba oil, direct to consumers for their own personal use.

Humble Beginnings
The amazing moisturizing properties of this unique seed oil have been known through the ages. Early Native Americans and the Indians who inhabited northwestern Mexico used the seeds and their oil for many applications. While they found it useful in the making of a coffee-like beverage, medicines for cancer and kidney disorders, and chewing as a dietary supplement and an appetite suppressant when food was scarce, probably the most lasting use has been for treating skin and scalp.

First officially documented in 1822 by German botanist Johann Link and eventually renamed Simmondsia chinensis by Austrian botanist, Camillo Karl Schneider, in 1912, the unique properties of jojoba had been discovered by chemists in the 1930's. Traditionally, sperm whale oil had been the product of choice for use in cosmetics. But the 1971 U.S. ban on sperm whale oil import sent cosmetics manufacturers looking for a suitable replacement. Jojoba fit the bill.

Nature's Best
Jojoba “oil” is different from other vegetable oils in that it is not actually triglyceride oil but a liquid wax. Its unique chemical makeup mimics the sebum naturally present on human skin. This is what makes it such a desirable product for the cosmetics we use everyday. According to the International Jojoba Export Council, jojoba is odorless, natural, non-greasy, and extremely stable. It doesn't break down when exposed to water or oxygen and, a natural carrier of Vitamin E and a natural antioxidant it is an extremely efficient non-comedogenic moisture regulator, penetrating the skin to moisturize without blocking the pores.

A perennial woody shrub native to the semiarid Sonoran Desert region of northwestern Mexico and the neighboring southwestern United States, jojoba grows in dense stands in the wild. It is presently also commercially cultivated in plantations all around the world in countries including Argentina, Australia, Chile, Egypt, Israel, Mexico, Peru, and the USA.

Extracting “Liquid Gold”
The seeds of the jojoba plant are crushed using various methods to extract the golden-yellow oil. It can be further processed with filtration to remove the color and odor. The forms most used by the cosmetics industry are “golden or refined (lite) jojoba, hydrogenated jojoba, jojoba esters, hydrolyzed jojoba, ethoxylated jojoba and other value added jojoba derivatives.” (International Jojoba Export Council, www.ijec.net, Manufacturing with Jojoba)

Jojoba oil is readily available through many sources. While found in any number of commercial skin and hair care products, many suppliers provide various bottled quantities direct to the consumer at a reasonable price either through retail outlets or for purchase online. The oil can be used topically, applied directly to the skin and scalp to remove makeup and product buildup, moisturize and soften rough, dry skin, even to relieve sunburn and condition and soothe skin during and after shaving. Added to other products like shampoos and liquid soaps, it aids in deep cleansing and conditioning. Mixing jojoba oil with your favorite essential oils makes for a relaxing, aromatic conditioning treatment for skin during massage.
